Dr. Shannan E. McCann is quadruple Board Certified in Dermatology, Pediatric Dermatology, Pediatrics, and Adolescent Medicine. She graduated cum laude with a B.S. in Zoology from the University of Washington and went on to earn an M.Ed. in Secondary Education from Milligan College, where she achieved the highest GPA in her class and was recognized as the Delta Kappa Gamma Student Teacher of the Year.
Dr. McCann earned her Doctor of Medicine at James H. Quillen College of Medicine, East Tennessee State University, in 2002, where she was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. After completing a residency in Pediatrics and a fellowship in Adolescent Medicine through the Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium (SAUSHEC), she served as Chief of Adolescent Medicine at Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi. At Keesler, her clinic shared a hallway with dermatology, sparking her interest in skin disease and inspiring her to complete a residency in Dermatology through SAUSHEC. She finished a fellowship in Pediatric Dermatology at Texas Children’s Hospital through the Baylor College of Medicine in 2018, becoming the first Pediatric Dermatologist ever in the United States Air Force. As the sole pediatric dermatologist in the Department of Defense, she consulted on military children worldwide and advised the Air Force, Army, and Navy dermatology consultants to the U.S. Surgeon Generals on pediatric dermatology issues. She retired from the United States Air Force in 2023.
From 2018 to 2023, Dr. McCann served as core faculty for one of the largest dermatology programs in the nation, training Dermatology and Pediatric residents. She was honored in 2022 when selected for the coveted Distinguished Dermatology Faculty Award in recognition of her commitment to teaching and mentoring. She has extensive experience in diagnosing and treating a wide range of skin conditions in adults and children, and is skilled in lasers, cosmetics, and surgical procedures. Her expertise also encompasses laser safety in medical procedures, supported by her National Medical Laser Safety Officer Certification.
Her academic appointments have included Assistant Professor of Dermatology and Pediatrics at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and Adjunct Assistant Professor at both Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine and the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. She has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed medical journals including Cutis, the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, Pediatrics, and American Family Physician, has written textbook chapters, and has lectured at major conferences both nationally and internationally. She is a member of multiple professional organizations, including the American Academy of Dermatology, the Society for Pediatric Dermatology, the Texas Dermatological Society, the Texas Medical Association, and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Dr. McCann is passionate about community service, as illustrated by her leadership in humanitarian missions in Vietnam, Honduras, and Moldova, and her volunteer work at a student-run clinic at the University of Texas Health Science Center. In 2025, the American Academy of Dermatology presented her with the “Members Making a Difference Award” in recognition of her service.
Dr. McCann has been happily married for over 25 years and has two children. She enjoys spending time with family and friends, attending church, traveling, and gardening.
